about the books and our responsible life cycle

Back to bookshop

For ecoescape, the medium really is the message. Like most people we’re not perfect but we try to keep the responsible life cycle (below) at the centre of everything we do, ensuring the book and our business tread as carefully as you do.

The respoecoescape 2008nsible life cycle is a way of recognising that our actions, no matter how big or small, have an impact on the environment. When we put together the first edition of ecoescape, we knew that along with a message to help travellers go green, it was crucial to be respectful of the resources we needed to produce a guidebook.

We’ve continued this mantra into the production of this book and subsequent editions in the series. In the responsible life cycle, the reader also takes responsibility for the impact of the guide through recycling, sharing and composting. And so the cycle continues.

The responsible life cycle is also a metaphor. It helps keep our travels grounded because it reminds us that travel is about the impact of an entire trip. That means from our home, through a journey to a destination and back home again. ecoescape not only offers inspiration but also encourages you to share your stories of responsible escapism. People have been sharing stories about travel since prehistory. Storytelling has helped humans survive, protect and enjoy their environment and that’s why we hope you will feel inspired to share your experiences with others on this website.

How do we make the books?

Research:
We hopped on trains, buses, bicycles, bio-taxis and, of course, used our legs. The book contains our tried and tested advice on how to get around the UK without a car or plane.

Energy:
Our website and computers are powered by the wind, see www.green-hosting.co.uk and www.ecotricity.co.uk.

Print:
We use Cambrian Printers in Aberystwyth, Wales. They have won numerous awards for their green printing, collect water from the roof for their presses, only use FSC-certified papers and boards and even have a wormery under the stairs for their organic waste. Using a UK printer means it costs us more than going overseas but then we think profit is measured in more ways than the pennies in our pocket. The book is printed on Revive 50:50 FSC-certified paper using vegetable-based inks.
