Frequently asked questions
What is a Green Tourism Business Award?
This is an award given by the nationally recognised Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS). The GTBS assesses businesses and awards a gold, silver or bronze depending on the environmental performance of the business. Look out for the award logos like the one shown here, in our business directory.
How do you define disabled access?
The businesses with disabled access ensure that all the areas of the building or site are accessible to wheelchairs and facilities are in place to cater for other disabilities such as deafness or blindness where appropriate. The Disability Discrimination Act means that accommodation providers including small hotels and guest accommodation providers have to make reasonable adjustments to the way in which they deliver their services so that they do not discriminate against disabled people and are better able meet disabled peoples' requirements. However, some businesses cannot offer, for example, ground floor bedrooms. Where this is the case, they are not marked as having disabled access. The best course of action is to phone in advance if you’re not sure or check the website Tourism for All for more information on the DDA.
What does walking and cycling friendly mean?
This means that accommodation businesses welcome cyclists and walkers and offer facilities such as a drying room and cycle storage to their guests. Businesses with this award are assessed by VisitBritain and you’ll find the following logos on display:
