As one of the highest hostels in England, its location is perfect for harnessing renewable wind energy through its turbine. Solar heat photovoltaic installations and wood burning stoves provide further energy sources which have greatly reduced carbon dioxide emissions since their introduction in 2000 The hostel also offers alternative energy and recycling breaks through its education centres as well as weekend courses on the outdoors and environment

A railway trip back in time will take you to the idyllic hamlet of Lockton on the North Yorkshire Moors where forward-thinking environmental sustainability has been top of the agenda for this green youth hostel. The former village school and now renovated hostel uses solar panelling to heat the showers and a sedum roof for insulation and an additional wildlife habitat. Rainwater is harvested to supply the toilets and customers are encouraged to get behind the buildings impressive recycling initiatives.
