Ecotech Centre

Location: Norfolk, UK
Type
: Attraction

The wind turbine at the Ecotech Centre, otherwise known as Swaffham-I, provides enough electricity to power over 1,000 homes, an emission saving of over 3,161 tonnes of CO2 per year. The turbine also hides a spiral stairway up to the public viewing platform designed by Foster & Partners. Turbine tours are available by visiting the Ecotech Centre; a hub for environmental education welcoming delegations of adults and children alike. The building itself is a tall airy structure with a sloping glass roof creating cascades of water overhead on rainy days and helping to trap solar energy when the weather improves. The Centre houses the first toilet in East Anglia to be flushed with recycled rainwater. Thetford Forest nearby supplies thinnings to the biomass heating system and the surrounding gardens are all organically managed. Admission to the centre is free; however turbine tours are chargeable but well worth the 305 stair climb.
