Coriander Cottages & Mill

Location: Cornwall, UK
Type
: B&B, Cottage

In a former cider mill, these lovingly restored barns near Fowey have high spec furnishings and green credentials to match. They are powered by a ground source heat pump, solar panels and 100% green tariff and have been finished with a traditional lime render and insulated with local sheep’s wool. At the rear of the Mill, in the wild flower meadows, is an area known as ‘Merry Meet’ where villagers gathered in Medieval times. More recently the local area was famed in the novels of Cornish writer, Daphne Du Maurier. Today the two-acre wildlife garden surrounding the cottages is an ongoing project and features a nature trail around badger setts, orchards and ponds.

Gibson Mill

Location: Yorkshire, UK
Type
: Attraction

Gibson Mill remained silent and still for 50 years following the second world war until the National Trust embarked on a major restoration project in 2005. From the early days of the Industrial Revolution, the mill produced cotton using Hebden Water to power its huge water wheel. As part of the restoration, the water mill is back in action and has helped this unique visitor attraction to become fully self sufficient. The property generates its own electricity through the hydro-electric turbines and photovoltaic panels. The surrounding woodland provides biomass fuel for heating and natural spring water trickles down the hill to provide the mill with drinking water. Even the lift is powered by the renewable energy of its human occupants through a series of pulleys and weights. Although the history of the mill remains the focus of the attraction, its green credentials offer a unique angle from which to understand how industry and the environment interact.

Gant’s Mill

Location: Somerset, UK
Type
: B&B

The wheels at Gant’s Mill have provided power to centuries of wool, silk and corn production. Its present sixth generation miller diversified into electricity production and now the mill has become a small scale hydro power scheme and the site of a bed and breakfast and self catering property. The 65 acre farm invites its guests to participate in its seasonal activity such as lambing in spring or haymaking in June. The mill and eccentric colour themed gardens are also open to visitors during the summer months where the gentle flow of water is heard throughout.
