The first Earthship to ‘land’ in the UK was at this spot in Fife. The concept originated in the USA and involves the construction of self-sufficient and affordable buildings which reduce their impact on the environment. Earthships can be adapted to almost any climate using different recycled and reclaimed materials for construction. The Earthship is built into the landscape and its walls are made from earth-rammed tyres and aluminium cans. It provides its own heating, electricity, water and sewage treatment. Visitors can learn about sustainable building and have the opportunity to be creative with their waste. Tours can be arranged in advance. The Earthship is also on the site of the Craigencalt Ecology Centre, an interactive environmental education centre.
